MVP performance

Update: new YouTube clip – fast forward to 2:00. Old clip was removed.

Ichiro gave an All Star performance at yesterday’s game, including the first-ever inside-the-park home run at an All Star game. Read about it in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

And read this funny piece about Ichiro’s Japanese-speaking teammates:

Cleveland catcher Victor Martinez had a surprise for Ichiro when the Seattle center fielder arrived at AT&T Park.

Ichiro’s spot in the clubhouse was right next to Martinez, who politely said, “Konnichiwa,” to Ichiro upon his arrival. That’s the Japanese equivalent of “Hello,” and Ichiro was impressed both with that thoughtfulness on Martinez’s part and with the chance to interact with Martinez’s 2-year-old son.

Asked how good Martinez’s Japanese was, Ichiro laughed and said, “he’s good, but not as good as Raul Ibanez.”

Ibanez, the Mariner left fielder, is taking some Japanese lessons from Ichiro while Ichiro gets some schooling in Spanish from Ibanez.
